"The Reality Of Showbusiness"
A short story by Alexander The Poet
written on Oct.17, 2003
There once was this man. He had a relentless ambition to become famous. For over 5 years, he would perform on open mic nights to try and get discovered. His act was considered to be very obscene and offensive. This man would read words of filth about genitalia and sex. It would be quite common for him to start taking off his clothes during the performance. Before his act was over, the man would be standing on the stage, shirtless and with his pants down, in front of a large group of strangers, witnessing it all.
Legend has it, people said that this man had balls. Meaning, he had a lot of guts to come on stage and do what he did. On the other hand, it could also have meant that the people who witnessed his wicked act, literally saw his balls, and therefore, said he had balls? But that is really irrelevant to the heart of our story.
Because you see, when this man wasn't performing, and was living in the real world, or in reality, as it is known, he was often very sad and depressed. All this man wanted in life was to fall in love and to be loved. All this man wanted in life was to find that special girl that would love him as much as he would love her.
So what seemed to be the problem then? You see, this man was afraid and scared. That's absurd you might say! Are you trying to tell me, the reader, that this man, who does such a crude, lewd, and rude performance, is frightened of approaching a girl??? Well, that is the case you see, reader. Whenever he'd see a girl that he would like to get to know, he'd be dumbstruck. The man would have no clue as to how to approach her. His heart would melt and his knees would weaken.
Strange, isn't it? The same man that pretty much stands almost naked in front of a large group of strangers and recites words of filth, can't find the courage to approach a girl.
Perhaps it is true then. That showbusiness and reality are really 2 worlds apart? Maybe we shouldn't judge this man too quickly based on what he does on the stage?
I say this because...I am that man.
